Osprey Exos 34 Pack

Osprey Exos 34 Pack

An ultralight pack with features?  Say it ain’t so, Osprey.

Well, it is so – and we’re talking about bells and whistles like Osprey’s AirSpeed suspension, a Stow-on-the-Go trekking pole attachment, InsideOut compression system.  And that’s just the trademarked components, mind you.  What about tool loops, a 3-liter hydration sleeve, and a removable top lid?  Yep, these features are there too.

Osprey hits it right on the money with the Exos 34 pack, filling a gap between ultralight packs constructed of whispy fabrics and bags intended for long excursions into the backcountry. I’ve taken the Exos 34 on tons of day, weekend and three-day hikes – it rides very well and is easy to adjust on the fly.

I’ve got my grubby mitts on one of the Columbia Sportwear Mobex packs! Look for a hands-on video soon, but for now, here’s a video from the Outdoor Retailer show and a couple of pics to hold you over. Oh, and I’ve hidden the Mobex in a super secret location, so don’t come sneaking around my place in the middle of the night thinking you can make off with it. I’ve got dogs. Big dogs. And lions.

Osprey Talon 11 Pack

Osprey Talon 11 Pack

Osprey’s Talon series of packs are aimed toward individuals who need a pack for a multitude of activities, defined by Osprey as “active light pursuits”.  Weighing in at 1 pound, 6 ounces, the Talon 11 isn’t the lightest pack multi-use pack available – but that’s OK.  What you get is a fantastic pack with solid construction and an attention to detail that won’t fall apart if in comes in contact with (heaven forbid) rocks and tree branches.

Trail runners, mountain bikers, day (and possibly weekend) hikers, and adventure racers will appreciate the versatility of this pack, with adequately-padded shoulder straps, back panel, and hip belt.  The sternum strap is adjustable using a series of slots in the shoulder straps, allowing you move the strap up or down as needed. There are two lycra pockets on the shoulder straps that are perfect for your GPS, a small camera, or an energy bar.  Two hipbelt pockets with great zipper pulls provide additional up-front access to small items.

The Talon 11 will accommodate up to a 100-ounce hydration system, and has its own compartment directly behind the backpanel – a nice feature when you have to refill your hydration system.  No more unloading the contents of your pack or trying to squish the system into a sleeve in the main compartment – thanks Osprey!

There’s a large main compartment that seems just the right size for ultralight tarps, jackets, mountain bike gear, and other items that are needed on a day out on the trail, while the smaller slash compartment is perfect for a rain cover, poncho, and first aid kits.  A bevy of other features such as a blinker patch, tow loop, stretch woven side pockets, and a front panel bungee make this a pack a terrific choice for multi-sport enthusiasts.

I bet you are wondering how the Osprey Talon 11 rides, eh? The Talon 11 fit and rode extremely well, with almost no bounce while trail running. Pack the Talon 11 properly and it will hug your back like it was glued on.  Like with virtually every other pack made, your back will sweat.  Get used to it.  There’s not any magic behind the AirScape back panel – it’s comfy, but won’t provide much in the way of ventilation.

The Straight Scoop

Pros:

  • Good choice if you are a looking for a one-pack solution to cover a wide array of activities
  • When packed properly, the Talon 11 rides well, with little to no noticeable bounce
  • Great hydration sleeve minimizes fumbling around in the pack’s main compartment

That’s all.  No more needs to be said, really.  It’s a great pack for only $89.  Get rid of that old potato sack you lug around now and get yourself an Osprey Talon 11.

Dry Docs by Seattle Sports

No one likes wet maps, personal identification, or credit cards. Well, I guess I can’t speak for everyone, but I know that I’m not a happy guy when my wallet accidentally gets submerged while out on the water. I can’t imagine anyone being thrilled about a soggy wet wallet.
If you’ve ever been in this situation, [...]

I’ve seen the Injinji Toe Socks at trail running events and all sorts of other places for some time now, but have never gotten the opportunity to give them a whirl. And give them a whirl is exactly what I did.

Golite Poncho/Tarp Review

Golite Poncho/Tarp Review

For ultralight hikes, using gear that can serve double duty is the only way to go.  I’m not recommending that you go so far as using your titanium spork to dig a cat hole, that would just be taking things waaay too far.  If you are doing that, stop now — it’s just gross.
